Memories of Grandma

Dear Grandma~  I never knew you had such lovely things.  I'm sorry I never saw you with needle and thread except to darn socks.  I was so young and you were an older but very special grandma.  You didn't teach me to make lovely things but you did teach me how to bake delicious cookies.  Raw dough is still yummy.  As we got older I spied you eating raw dough too!

Mom sent me a box of your things and I was surprised to know they were handmade by you.

You had the best aprons.

Not a penny was wasted on new socks when the old ones could be mended.  Sorry, but I still walk around in my stocking feet!

No one in the world made better cookies than you and your Beef Noodle Soup is still my favorite.

It was fun, sort of, helping you hang the laundry on the line after being washed in your wringer washer.  Thank you for letting Sister Sharon and I make tents and play house by strewing sheets over the line for Shanty Town.

Sharon and I always loved walking to Howard's Grocer with you and getting candy necklaces and a big pickle from the pickle jar.  I love now that you always wore a dress and sensible shoes with modest heels.

I love your house to this day -- red banquet in the kitchen, double oven stove, hardwood floors, swinging kitchen door, glass knobs on all of your hall cupboards, front door with the little window to open and see "who's there",  the arched doorways, walk in closets, old locks with skeleton keys, and the mail box slot in the kitchen where the mailman delivered it. A second bathroom would have been nice.

It's been 28 years since I saw you last but Mom kept all of these treasures and now I have them.  Thank you, Dear Grandma.

~Love, Stephanie

P.S.  Dear Readers - The first photo is a lovely stack of 3 tea towels.  The adorable ladies are each embroidered on a tea towel of a sugar sack type thin fabric.  I suppose there are only 6 ladies because they rested on Sunday.

What a sweet, beautiful post. I got a little filled up when reading it. I have a picture of my Grandmother in her sensible shoes and pretty, but modest cotton dress right near my sewing table. My grandmother too did a lot of needlework and embroidery. Especially embroidery when she got older and no longer had a huge family to mend and sew for. The blocks are beautiful. What will you do with them? They would be pretty as is framed.

I love things that were made by someone I knew. I have quilts made by my grandmother, pillowcases with lace tatted by my next door neighbor, and throws crocheted by my mother. i hope to incorporate the crochet into quilts for each of my daughters someday.

Priceless. I have a bunch of these dish towels my grandma made me for my wedding. I didn't want them to get ruined so I made them into a quilt. I will treasure it forever!

It looks like the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Your grandmother passed on a great heritage and appreciation of handwork to you.

What a lovely post about your grandmother! Your mother was wise to keep all those things and send them to you now when you understand their importance. The embroidered ladies are so pretty!

What family treasures! They remind me of the folk song "Dashing Away with the Smoothing Iron".

ahhh I'm teary-eyed... so touching. Grandmothers are a treasure :) I have some stitchings made by my grandmother, I love to rub my finger over the stitches and wonder what she was thinking when she took the stitches. I'm going to do my very best to carry on the tradition, when I finally become a grand!
