A Vintage Horror Story

Isn't this adorable?  It's a laundry bag for Abby.  I wasn't sure if it was old or new but something told me it was old based on the fabric and smell.  I didn't care either way because it was priced at $3.99 and I love it.  Wanting to freshen it up I gave it a soak in Oxy Clean.  When I went to rinse, to my horror it was stained with pinky orange color all over the place.  The more I rinsed the more it bled.  I even had a Shout Color Catcher in the water.

Do you see the faded-ness of the orange words and the color disappeared from the scarf?

Glenna to the rescue.  I emailed her about 1) the age of the bag.  Did people use the crayon color technique way back when? and 2) can these stains be removed?  Glenna determined the bag is in fact an oldie.  She gave me various tips to deal with the stains.  The stains were so massive I ended up spraying the suggested Oxy Clean Max Force heavy duty super duper strength stuff all over the bag then rinsing until no more bubbles.  I stuffed a towel inside and laid it out to dry.

I can't begin to tell you how much better it looks now and I don't even mind the faded-ness.  Thank you Glenna!

These pretty feed sacks came to live with me.  Oh happy day!

I like it, faded and all. If it's old it should be faded. You did a great job saving it, when I first saw the picture I thought it was a vintage piece. I didn't see anything wrong with it. Give Abby a hug for me. Enjoy, Toni Anne ;->

It’s beautiful, faded and all! You always have the most amazing finds!

My LQS had a free BOM with old stitchery patterns of a cute little dog and this doggie looks a lot like the one in the stitcheries. I will take some photo’s to show you!

Hugs for Abby!!

More feed sacks? I can't stand it!!! Envious is not a strong enough word to describe how I'm feeling. *drool*

I don't know how the laundry bag looked before you washed it but it looks just fine now. It has a real vintage look to it.. Obviously it had never been washed before.

It looks early 50s to me based on children's book illustrations. A lovely find. If you wanted to restore the colour have you thought about Derwent pencils? I think it looks fine the way it is. Well done for winning the cleaning battle.

Lovely feedsacks. I think you are developing a lovely collection.
